MatSE Grad receives Fulbright

Gordon Nangmenyi, Ph.D. student in Economy's group, has received a Fulbright Award. Nangmenyi will spend the next year working with researchers at Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa, developing and testing an alternative water disinfection system for use in rural areas of South Africa.

Foldable stretchable circuits

John Rogers and his colleagues have demonstrated that it is possible to use ultrathin silicon to build entire sheets of foldable and stretchable circuits made of devices such as transistors, amplifiers, and logic gates.

Researchers Discover How Stealthy HIV Protein Gets Into Cells

Scientists have known for more than a decade that a protein associated with the HIV virus is good at crossing cell membranes, but they didn't know how it worked. A multidisciplinary team from the U of I led by Gerard Wong has solved the mystery, and their findings could improve the design of therapeutic agents that cross a variety of membrane types.
