"Knowledge for the Global Classroom: An International Conference on Teaching Culture, History and Humanities," June 22-28, 2008. The International Summer Institute is organized jointly by the area studies centers and other international studies programs at the University of Illinois. This intensive institute will address more effective ways of incorporating non-Western histories as well as Western history in teaching of World Histories/Cultures. Case studies, presentations and lesson plan development will focus on the following regions: Africa, East Asia, European Union, Latin America, Eastern Europe & Russia, Middle East & South Asia, and the incorporation of the United States in these histories. While all K-14 teachers are welcome, the curriculum materials are geared mainly towards middle school, high school and college educators. The workshop is aimed at social studies/social science teachers, particularly those teaching history, geography, sociology, and world cultures. Participating teachers will receive: 30 CPDUs (for 30 contact hours) for Illinois teachers; 3.0 University of Illinois CEUs (30 contact hours) for non-Illinois teachers. We are also proud to announce our Keynote Speaker: Professor Antoinette Burton, Department Chair of the History Department at the University of Illinois and Bastion Professor of Global and Transnational Studies. Professor Burton's tentative keynote address will be "Reverberations: Eventfulness in World History." The registration fee is $100. This covers all housing costs and some of the meals. Housing will be provided at the Hendrick House, a private dorm on campus, from June 22-28, 2008.

The Global Demand for Biofuel
Biofuels have been embraced globally as renewable sources for energy, but despite the enthusiasm there remain many questions and some concerns.
Participants will learn about bioenergy developments nationally and internationally, international agricultural crop production and second generation bi-products that can be used for biofuels, and the environmental, economic, and societal impacts of bioenergy.
This 2 1/2 day workshop for agriculture educators and social science and science teachers, will cover the latest science, include visits to biofuel labs and test-crop sites, and an opportunity develop lesson plans.
Credit: Participating teachers will receive CPDUs or CEUs. Graduate credit from the University of Illinois, College of ACES is available. Cost per credit is $320. Tuition waivers cannot be used.
Housing: Single room lodging will be provided at Hendrick House, a private dorm.

Deadline Approaching for Registration in the Intensive Foreign Language Instruction Program (IFLIP)
The School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics offers a unique learning opportunity in the form of the Intensive Foreign Language Instruction Program (IFLIP).
IFLIP provides language instruction Monday-Friday in the summer (two hours a day for a three-week period) and in the winter (three hours a day for a two-week period). Classes are taught by advanced graduate students or faculty. Each class must have a minimum of 10 participants to be offered and is limited to a maximum of 20 participants to provide the most effective learning environment.
IFLIP classes are open to UIUC students, faculty, staff, retirees, and to the general public. Children under the age of 18 are not eligible to participate. Registration will be $75 for UIUC students, $100 for faculty, staff, and retirees, and $125 for the general public.
IFLIP focuses on conversational skills and the content is typically based on the needs of the students such as travel preparation, survival language skills, etc. There is minimal homework. Instructors may require students to purchase course packets, handouts, or textbooks. There is no attendance policy and no academic credit is given for IFLIP instruction.
