Illinois International Update

News and Announcements

India Sixty: The Critical Questions
This year marks sixty years of India's independence and follows several decades of campus engagement with India.  With India identified as a major focus within the University's Strategic Plan, faculty from multiple units, disciplines and colleges have met over the past several months to plan this initiative, which aims to strengthen and expand the campus's links with India.

To this end, the campus committee of an Illinois-India initiative is presently organizing a symposium entitled, India Sixty: The Critical Questions, which will be held 2-3 November 2007.

The symposium will examine issues related to US-India relations, technology, globalization, poverty, human security, gender, environment, education, and health.  Additionally, a banquet will be held on Friday November 2 to celebrate the strength of the University's India links, and to recognize those who have played a part in establishing them.

In addition, on November 1, the Department of Landscape Architecture will hold the Shalamar Bagh Workshop, in which cultural landscape heritage specialists from India and Pakistan will convene at the University of Illinois to discuss their most recent work, mutual interest, and promising international collaborative proposals for garden history and conservation.

The initiative has received wide support, including the Provost's Office, the Associate Provost for International Affairs, the Business school, the Coordinated Science Laboratory, the Program in South Asian & Middle Eastern Studies, and a Hewlett Conference Award.
