Bulgaria and Romania joined the European Union in January of 2007, bringing the number of member countries from 25 to 27. This brings the European Union into the heart of southeastern Europe, while adding thirty million citizens to the Union. This accession has also required that Bulgaria and Romania reform their economy and political systems in many ways. This panel discussion examines the reforms undertaken by Bulgaria and Romania to gain membership into the EU. We will also explore what this expansion means for the future of the EU as a whole. Panelists:His Excellency John Bruton, EU Ambassador to the United States; The Honorable George Predescu, Consul General of Romania, Chicago; The Honorable Ivan Sotirov, Consul General of Bulgaria, Chicago; The Honorable Arvydas Daunoravicius, Consul General of Lithuania, Chicago; Dr. Robert Pahre (Moderator), University of Illinois Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Illinois European Union Center; Dr. William Brustein (Opening Remarks), University of Illinois Associate Provost for International Affairs and Director of International Programs and Studies.

Anita Keller grew up near Chicago, Illinois. She developed an interest in disability sports and other disability issues through her youngest brother, who was born with congenital disabilities. She has completed degrees in biology and African studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master's degree in African studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her past international work experience includes developing a paralympic program for Rwandese refugees in Tanzania, teaching in South Korea and working with American high school students and local NGO's on small-scale development projects in Kenya. She has also taught high school, resettled refugees, and developed educational programming and teacher trainings for a children's museum, all in North Carolina. Anita came to VFA in February 2003 to start a new Sports for Life program in Angola. She has fast fallen in love with the people (and beaches!) of Angola and looks forward to developing a long-lasting disability sport program there
